Man accused of five sexual assaults attempts another in an inmate transfer facility

BUCKEYE, AZ – A troubling incident at the Maricopa County Intake, Transfer, and Release Facility has raised questions about security measures and inmate supervision. Justin Avery, already facing multiple assault charges, allegedly attacked three more women while awaiting court proceedings.

Avery, arrested for assaulting two women near Arizona State University, was released the next day only to commit further assaults. His actions culminated in a violent episode at the facility on West Watson Lane, where security footage captured a series of alarming events.

The facility, divided into male and female sections, recorded Avery overpowering a female detainee who was asleep. The footage shows Avery crawling on the floor before attacking her. Another detainee’s alert led to a quick response from detention officers, ending the assault within 90 seconds.

During the investigation, Avery made a bizarre statement, claiming he was drawn to the victim’s appearance “like a spider to the fly.” This incident has prompted Maricopa County officials to review their supervision model, which is designed for efficiency and safety.

Facility representatives acknowledged the challenge of monitoring all areas simultaneously, emphasizing the continuous presence of detention officers. They confirmed that this type of incident is unprecedented in the facility’s four-year history and committed to enhancing security protocols.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is now examining ways to prevent future occurrences and ensure the safety of all inmates. Avery remains in custody, with additional charges of sexual assault likely.
