LYNNWOOD, WA – A 13-year-old girl tragically lost her life on Wednesday after being struck by a stray bullet during a fight at the Alderwood Mall in Lynnwood, Washington. The victim, Jayda Woods-Johnson, was not involved in the altercation that unfolded near the establishment’s food court. The conflict was between two separate groups, according to a statement by the Lynnwood Police Department.
The authorities have arrested a 16-year-old male from Edmonds, who was identified as the suspect. In an unusual turn of events, it was the prime suspect’s mother who turned him into the police. He is currently in custody and will be charged with murder. However, the investigation is not over yet, as authorities are still looking for the weapon used during the incident.
The company that owns the mall expressed their gratitude towards their security team and the police for their rapid response and leadership throughout the challenging situation. The company, Brookfield Properties, also expressed grief over the senseless tragedy that occurred in their shopping center.
A spokesperson said, “We are completely devastated by the senseless, horrific tragedy that happened in our shopping center. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends during this unimaginable time.”
To pay respects to the victim and the entire community, Alderwood Mall will remain closed for the day.
