MIAMI, FL – A young man has been arrested in connection with two murders, authorities announced Wednesday. The suspect, identified as a 25-year-old Hungarian national named Zolyomi, faces two counts of second-degree murder related to incidents in Miami and Miami Beach.
According to police, Zolyomi was romantically involved with one of the victims, Carlos Villaquiran. Text messages from October reveal Villaquiran accused Zolyomi of physical abuse, theft, and using a false identity, going by the name Thomas Cray. Villaquiran was found strangled a month later, his body partially submerged in a bathtub at his Pennsylvania Avenue apartment.
In a separate case, a man was discovered dead in the driver’s seat of a crashed car in Miami on January 20. Surveillance footage allegedly shows Zolyomi exiting the vehicle’s passenger side following the crash. The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide.
Zolyomi was apprehended in downtown Miami and is currently held without bond. He appeared before a judge shortly after his arrest and is scheduled to face a division judge on Thursday. Investigators have also disclosed that Zolyomi has a criminal history, though details remain sparse.
Authorities believe Zolyomi may be connected to other crimes, although they have not specified further cases. The investigation is ongoing as police continue to gather evidence and interview potential witnesses.
The chilling nature of these crimes has left the local community on edge. Residents have expressed concerns about safety, prompting increased law enforcement presence in the affected neighborhoods.
As the legal proceedings unfold, prosecutors will likely build their case around the evidence collected, including fingerprints and surveillance footage. The outcome of these proceedings could provide closure to the families of the victims.
The case underscores the complexities of domestic relationships and the potential for violence therein. It also highlights the challenges law enforcement faces in unraveling crimes involving multiple jurisdictions.
