BRADENTON, FL – A late-night home invasion in Bradenton turned fatal when a homeowner confronted two masked intruders with a firearm, resulting in the death of one suspect and the arrest of another. The incident unfolded Thursday night, leaving the local community both shaken and reassured by the decisive actions of the homeowner.
Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells commended the homeowner for his quick response, emphasizing that the man acted to protect his family from imminent danger. According to Wells, the homeowner’s swift actions were necessary during the attempted burglary.
The suspects, both masked and armed with a crowbar, had broken into a home on Hickory Hammock Circle. The homeowner and his wife were alerted to the intrusion by a security alarm and immediately took action. The homeowner instructed his wife to find safety while he confronted the intruders.
The confrontation led to a gunfire exchange, during which 27-year-old Jorge Nacin Flores Toledo, also known as Annabelle Miller Valencia, was shot and later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities revealed that Flores Toledo had a criminal history, including a previous burglary arrest in Illinois and an outstanding warrant for a parole violation.
The second suspect, 39-year-old Michelle Soto Melo, fled the scene but was apprehended by a K-9 unit a few blocks away. Investigations revealed that Soto Melo had entered the United States on a now-expired 90-day visa from Chile and recently traveled to Tampa.
Sheriff Wells noted the possibility of additional charges against Soto Melo, including felony murder, due to the death of his accomplice during the crime. The authorities are also investigating whether the duo targeted other homes in the area.
During a court appearance, Soto Melo required a translator and remained in custody. He maintained that he did not possess a firearm during the incident, a point that the authorities are continuing to investigate.
Sheriff Wells issued a stern reminder about the state’s stance on home invasions, underscoring that in Florida, homeowners are within their rights to protect themselves against intruders. As the investigation continues, the community is left to reflect on the incident and its implications for local safety.
