Mervo High School student fatally shot on campus shortly after dismissal; suspect quickly captured – Baltimore Sun
A male student shot and killed a fellow student at Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School in Baltimore on Friday afternoon, officials said. The suspect was apprehended by school police officers, who recovered his weapon.
A male victim was shot dead by a suspect after a heated encounter in a parking lot behind a school. This happened right at dismissal in broad daylight about 2:30 in the afternoon. Officials couldn’t say whether students witnessed it but said many students were outside because it was dismissal.
Monday was the first day of school for the city’s public school students, and several students fled from the rear of the school on Tivoly Avenue toward a nearby bus stop after hearing several shots.
Several violent incidents have taken place at Mervo and in city schools over the past few years.
After speaking with Mervo employees, Baltimore Teachers Union President Diamonté Brown said that faculty and staff need some space and healing.
Ivan Bates, the Democratic nominee for Baltimore state’s attorney, said he would take action against illegal guns that fuel the retaliatory cycle of gun violence.
T. Johnson, who graduated from the school in 1988, said the shooting was embarrassing and sad that the school had gotten to this point and this violence is happening.
