A restaurant security officer fatally shot the masked gunman after he opened fire, while Mayor Darren Bryant and a DJ suffered minor injuries.
ROBBINS, IL — A masked gunman who opened fire inside a suburban Chicago restaurant was fatally shot by a security officer early Saturday, while Robbins Mayor Darren Bryant suffered a minor graze wound as he sought safety, according to village officials and authorities.
The shooting happened late Friday into early Saturday at Harold’s Chicken Ice Bar in the 13700 block of South Claire Boulevard. Village officials said Bryant was inside picking up food when the gunman entered and fired toward an intended target. Officials said Bryant was not the target of the attack. A DJ working at the business was also injured.
The Cook County Sheriff’s Office identified the man who was killed as Marquelle Rose, 29, of Chicago. Village officials said a contracted security officer at the restaurant intervened after Rose opened fire and shot him. The Cook County medical examiner’s office said Rose was pronounced dead around 1 a.m. Saturday and that his death was ruled a homicide from multiple gunshot wounds.
Bryant was grazed while trying to get to safety with other people inside the restaurant, according to the village. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment and released within about an hour. Authorities described his injury as minor. Village spokesman Sean Howard told CBS Chicago that Bryant had been at the restaurant to pick up a food order when the shooting began.
A DJ who was working inside the restaurant was also injured during the shooting. Reports from local authorities and news organizations described that person’s injuries as minor or not life-threatening. No additional information about the injured DJ was immediately released. Authorities have not said that either Bryant or the DJ was the person the gunman intended to shoot.
Village officials said the masked gunman entered the restaurant and began firing toward an intended target before the security officer responded. Authorities have not publicly identified that intended target or said what led to the shooting. No motive had been announced as of Monday, and investigators had not released additional details about the events that preceded the gunfire.
The shooting initially was reported as occurring Saturday evening, but officials later said it happened late Friday night into Saturday morning. Robbins police requested help from Cook County sheriff’s police detectives as the investigation continued. Authorities have not announced criminal charges connected to the shooting or publicly identified the security officer who fired at Rose.
Village officials described the violence as an isolated incident and said those involved were not Robbins residents. Residents interviewed by FOX 32 Chicago described the restaurant as a late-night lounge that also serves food and alcohol. Some residents said the shooting raised concerns about the business, while others stressed that they did not believe the violence represented the broader community.
The Cook County Sheriff’s Office remained involved in the investigation Monday. Authorities had not released a motive, the identity of the reported intended target or further details about what led to the shooting.
