Police found Janet Camacho wounded outside a Bethel Avenue home before locating her brother dead inside, prosecutors said.
PENNSAUKEN, NJ — A brother and sister died Wednesday after authorities said the man fatally shot his sister outside a Pennsauken home before dying by suicide inside the residence, prompting a large police response and an approximately 90-minute operation around the property.
Pennsauken police were called to the 4400 block of Bethel Avenue at about 9:01 a.m. Sept. 16 after receiving a report of a shooting, according to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office. Officers were also told that a man armed with a handgun was inside the home. Authorities identified the woman as 59-year-old Janet Camacho and the man as her brother, 60-year-old Daniel Lopez, both of Pennsauken.
Officers arriving at the scene found Camacho suffering from a gunshot wound on the front steps of the residence, prosecutors said. She was taken to Cooper University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at about 9:38 a.m.
Police established a perimeter around the home as members of the Camden County Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team joined the operation. News footage from the scene showed a heavy law enforcement presence, including tactical officers and an armored vehicle. A robotic device was also seen entering part of the property as authorities worked to secure the residence.
At about 10:37 a.m., police found Lopez dead inside the home, the prosecutor’s office said. Authorities said he had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at about 10:41 a.m.
The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office said detectives are investigating the deaths as a murder-suicide involving family members. Prosecutors identified Lopez as the suspect in Camacho’s death. Authorities had not announced a motive as of Thursday and did not release additional information about what may have led to the shooting.
Officials also have not said whether Camacho or Lopez lived at the Bethel Avenue residence where the shooting occurred. Both were identified as Pennsauken residents. No other suspects were being sought in connection with the incident, and authorities said there was no known continuing threat to the community.
The shooting brought a large emergency response to the residential area Wednesday morning. Some nearby residents were escorted from homes while law enforcement officers secured the scene, according to local reporting. Police activity continued until officers located Lopez inside the residence.
Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay and Pennsauken Police Chief Phil Olivo said the investigation remains active and ongoing. Authorities said no further information was being released immediately. Detectives with the prosecutor’s homicide unit and Pennsauken police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
