Fugitive murder suspect caught after a month

KAUFMAN, TX – A fugitive murder suspect is back behind bars after evading law enforcement for nearly a month. Trevor McEwan, accused of killing his neighbor, was apprehended Monday at his grandmother’s residence in Van Zandt County, Texas. The arrest brings relief to the victim’s family and the community, who have lived in fear since McEwan’s escape.

Salvador Martinez, whose son, Aaron Martinez, was allegedly murdered by McEwan, expressed gratitude to the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office for their relentless pursuit. The Martinez family had temporarily relocated to Houston, fearing for their safety after McEwan cut off his ankle monitor and disappeared on the day his trial was set to begin.

The 28-day manhunt for McEwan had been a priority for Kaufman County authorities. His trial was originally scheduled for May 5, but instead, he managed to evade law enforcement by removing his electronic tracking device and fleeing. McEwan had been out on a $2 million bond, which he was able to post despite violating previous bond conditions.

Authorities have now ensured McEwan remains in custody without bond, with his trial rescheduled for August. The district attorney’s office has indicated that additional charges will likely be filed, potentially stemming from his capture in Van Zandt County.

The investigation into McEwan’s escape continues, with a focus on individuals who may have assisted in his evasion. Authorities have confirmed he was apprehended at his grandmother’s home, and they are exploring charges against anyone who may have harbored him during his time on the run.

Carlos Quintanilla, a family friend and local activist, has described the case as a hate crime, urging the community to await the trial’s outcome. As the legal process unfolds, the Martinez family and the broader community hope for justice and closure.

With McEwan back in custody, Kaufman County officials emphasize their commitment to upholding the law and ensuring community safety. The upcoming trial is expected to address both the murder charges and any additional offenses related to McEwan’s escape.
