Fourteen-year-old fatally shot outside rec center

WASHINGTON D.C. – A neighborhood in Washington D.C. was left rattled after a 14-year-old boy was shot and killed outside a local community center last Thursday, August 1. The victim was identified as David Bailey, a former student at Deal Middle School.

The shooting took place near a city surveillance camera near the Lamond Recreation Center- an area once considered a sanctuary for local families. Patricia Cooper, a long-time resident of the neighborhood who frequently uses the center, expressed her shock over the incident.

Not too far from the scene lives Michelle Carpenter. She shared that fear is an undercurrent in their neighborhood, a sentiment that intensified following the recent shooting. She described the horror when shots were fired into a group outside the community center.

Caught in the crossfire was an 18-year-old man who is now in critical condition. His family revealed to 7News that he was the target of the shooting due to a feud and took a bullet to his neck.

According to police, both victims were shot outside the community center. The 18-year-old managed to return to the center seeking help.

Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is presently investigating the relationship between the two victims and the motive behind the shooting.
