Former basketball coach sentenced to 34 years in prison

HONOLULU, HAWAII – A former high school basketball coach was sentenced to nearly 34 years in prison after pleading guilty to a long history of sexual abuse and harassment involving multiple students he coached on Oahu. The sentencing drew emotional responses from victims who confronted him in court.

The courtroom atmosphere was tense as U.S. District Judge Sebright described Dwayne Euan as a “predator with a whistle,” highlighting how he misused his authority to exploit young girls. Victims expressed that justice was long overdue.

Euan had admitted guilt last December to 12 federal charges, including sex trafficking, coercion, and creating child sexual abuse material. His crimes targeted middle and high school girls he coached from 2005 to 2023. Judge Sebright labeled his actions as explicit and disturbing before sentencing him to nearly 34 years in prison, followed by lifetime probation, and mandated sex offender registration.

One victim shared a sense of relief following the sentencing, acknowledging the lengthy wait for justice. “It was a long time coming,” she said, reflecting on the years it took to reach this point. She expressed gratitude for the support from fellow survivors.

Several victims addressed the court, sharing the ongoing trauma they endure. They urged educational institutions to act swiftly when allegations emerge, hoping this case serves as a catalyst for change.

Throughout the proceedings, four victims either spoke directly to Euan or submitted letters. Their testimonies underscored a powerful day at the courthouse, emphasizing resilience and determination.

The case has sparked a broader conversation about the responsibility of schools to protect students and respond promptly to allegations of misconduct. This sentencing marks a significant step in the pursuit of justice for the victims.
