Eight dead after sudden storm capsizes a small boat

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CA – A boating accident on Lake Tahoe’s west shore turned tragic when a sudden storm capsized a boat, leaving eight dead and two hospitalized. The accident occurred Saturday near D.L. Bliss State Park, as a storm unexpectedly swept in, catching many off guard.

Local officials described the weather event as a rare, fast-moving storm that transformed a sunny day into a scene of chaos. Witnesses reported calm conditions that quickly gave way to strong winds, rain, and high swells, creating perilous conditions on the lake.

The U.S. Coast Guard shared images of the 27-foot boat that capsized, highlighting the severity of the situation. Eldorado County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that 10 people were aboard; eight lost their lives, while two survivors were taken to the hospital. An investigation is ongoing to determine if life jackets were worn by those on board.

Lake Tahoe’s unique conditions can make it particularly hazardous. Waves reaching eight feet can be more dangerous than much larger ocean swells due to the shorter distance between them. The lake’s depth and cold temperatures further complicated search efforts, making recovery challenging.

Mayor Wallace emphasized the tragedy as the most severe of several incidents over the weekend. Emergency services were stretched thin, rescuing 11 people from another capsized boat within city limits. These events underscore the unpredictable nature of the lake.

Visitors are urged to exercise caution. The mayor advised those renting boats or bringing their own to hire local captains familiar with the lake’s conditions. This precaution could prevent future tragedies and ensure a safer experience on the water.

Authorities continue to investigate and have not yet released details about the victims, including their ages, genders, or hometowns.
