HOUSTON, TX – A tragedy unfolded in Houston on Tuesday as a deputy constable on his way to work was fatally shot at an intersection in the afternoon, as per police information. Early Tuesday evening, police reported a person of interest had been detained in connection with the incident.
Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz stated that the deputy, driving in his personal SUV, was at a halted intersection in the city’s west when a man alighted from his automobile, approached the deputy and shot him multiple times at around 12:30 p.m. The deputy, Maher Husseini, was not in uniform at the time of the incident.
Husseini had been serving since 2021 with Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office and had his patrol area in the South-Central District, Constable Mark Herman confirmed in a social media announcement. The person of interest was apprehended in Galveston, about 50 miles southeast of Houston, according to a police update on social media.
Previously, the suspect was described as a man in his mid-thirties to early forties, with dark thinning hair, donned in dark clothes, and driving a charcoal grey Chevy Impala with a distinguishable bumper disfigurement.
Police Chief Diaz said investigators are still trying to identify a motive for the shooting and whether the deputy was specifically targeted. Potentially, it might have resulted from a road rage incident.
Terming the incident as “absolutely tragic,” Diaz lamented the loss of a dedicated public servant for the community, a sentiment echoed by Constable Herman, who was saddened by the murder of one of their deputies.
