TAMPA, FL – In an early morning encounter on Skipper Road, a Hillsborough County deputy faced a harrowing situation when a traffic stop turned into a gunfire exchange. The deputy, identified as Giovani Rodriguez, was unharmed after a suspect fired at him multiple times before fleeing the scene.
The incident unfolded as Deputy Rodriguez attempted to stop a vehicle lacking a license plate. Before he could exit his patrol car, the suspect opened fire, prompting Rodriguez to return shots. The suspect’s vehicle, a silver Jeep Cherokee, sped
down the road before being abandoned about a quarter mile away. The suspect then fled on foot into the darkness, eluding immediate capture.
Authorities have since discovered that the Jeep was stolen during an armed carjacking in Brandon on October 27. The sheriff’s office is appealing to the community for any information or footage that may aid in identifying the suspect.
Despite the close call, Deputy Rodriguez, a three-year veteran of the force, remains safe and unharmed. As a standard procedure, he has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is under investigation.
The vehicle was located shortly after the shooting, but the suspect remains at large. Officials assure the public that there is no immediate danger, though they urge residents to remain vigilant.
The incident highlights the inherent risks law enforcement officers face during routine traffic stops, where the unknown can quickly escalate into life-threatening situations.
Rodriguez’s encounter occurred at 4:46 a.m., and despite the rapid escalation, his swift response ensured his safety and underscored the unpredictable nature of police work.
The sheriff’s department continues to gather evidence and encourages anyone with information to come forward as they work to resolve the case.
