Deputies investigate pre-dawn shooting that injured three

Sheriff’s office says the men were headed to a gathering when shots came from an unknown location.

MIAMI, FL — Three men were hospitalized early Sunday after gunfire struck them in Miami-Dade’s Brownsville neighborhood, authorities said. Deputies responded shortly before 4:30 a.m. to a ShotSpotter alert near the 2400 block of Northwest 55th Street and later learned the victims had reached local hospitals in stable condition.

Investigators with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said the men were traveling to a gathering when they were hit by rounds fired from an unknown direction. One man was dropped off at Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, while two others drove themselves to Northshore Hospital and were later transferred to Ryder. As of Sunday evening, detectives had not identified a suspect or released a possible motive. The case remains in the early stages, with officials focusing on the immediate area flagged by the acoustic gunshot detection alert and the route the victims were taking before the shooting.

Deputies were first dispatched after the ShotSpotter system registered gunfire in the residential block just east of Northwest 27th Avenue. While units were en route, dispatchers were told a man with an apparent gunshot wound had arrived at Jackson Memorial. A short time later, two more men with gunshot wounds checked in at Northshore, also described as stable. “Shots were fired from an unknown location,” the sheriff’s office said during its preliminary account of how the men were hit as they headed to meet others. Detectives noted the victims were together but did not disclose their ages or how they were traveling at the moment the shots rang out. The exact number of rounds and the type of firearm used were not immediately known.

By midmorning, investigators had marked the Brownsville block for evidence collection and began reconstructing the victims’ path to the reported gathering, according to the sheriff’s office. Officials confirmed that all three men were listed in stable condition after receiving treatment at Jackson Memorial’s Ryder Trauma Center, Miami-Dade’s primary trauma facility. Authorities did not say whether any nearby homes or vehicles were struck. No arrests had been announced. The sheriff’s office also did not release identifying information for the victims, citing the open investigation. Detectives said they were working to determine whether the men were targeted or hit by stray rounds and whether any surveillance devices in the area captured images of the shooter or shooters. The office did not provide a description of any vehicle linked to the attack.

Brownsville is a densely built section of unincorporated northwest Miami-Dade bordered by major corridors, where deputies have responded to past ShotSpotter activations and violent crime calls. The 2400 block of Northwest 55th Street includes modest single-family homes and small apartment buildings set back from the road. Pre-dawn weekend hours in the area often see light traffic and scattered foot activity, conditions that can complicate efforts to find witnesses quickly. The sheriff’s office said the men were on their way to a gathering, but it did not specify the location of that event, the size of the group, or whether others in the party heard the gunfire. Records from Jackson Memorial show Ryder Trauma Center frequently receives transfers from other facilities in northern Miami-Dade, which aligns with how two of the victims were routed for care Sunday.

Detectives said the case will proceed with standard steps: collecting shell casings and ballistic fragments, canvassing for doorbell or commercial surveillance video along Northwest 55th Street and nearby cross streets, and interviewing the three men once medical staff clear extended questioning. As of late Sunday, no criminal charges had been filed, and the sheriff’s office had not scheduled a briefing naming a suspect. Any later filings would be handled through the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office. Officials said additional updates would be provided if a person of interest is identified or if investigators determine the gunfire was connected to another incident reported over the weekend. No road closures were in effect after the initial response, and deputies did not issue a shelter-in-place advisory for the surrounding blocks.

Neighbors described waking to sirens and seeing cruisers turning onto Northwest 55th Street before dawn, with one resident noting the quiet that typically follows overnight until the first buses run. A passerby who arrived after sunrise said yellow tape blocked part of the block while detectives spoke with people emerging from nearby homes. The sheriff’s office did not detail the number of deputy units assigned to the scene or how long the initial perimeter remained in place. Hospital officials confirmed the three men were stable but did not release ages, citing patient privacy rules. No additional injuries were reported.

As of Sunday night, the investigation remained open with no suspect information released. Detectives said they were reviewing early accounts from the victims and mapping the route to the reported gathering. Further updates are expected if surveillance video is recovered or if witness interviews provide a workable description. The next formal update is anticipated once investigators determine whether the men were targeted or hit by stray gunfire.
