Authorities identified the boy as 14-year-old Jeremy Rosales; a candlelight memorial is planned as detectives continue their search.
VICTORVILLE, CA — A 14-year-old boy was shot multiple times in a residential neighborhood near Mojave Vista Park on Friday night and later died at a hospital, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said. The shooting was reported around 8:21 p.m. Jan. 16 near Glen Canyon Lane and Burwood Avenue.
Deputies and paramedics found the teen in the street with gunshot wounds and began lifesaving efforts before he was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. On Sunday, authorities identified him as Jeremy Rosales of Victorville. The case is being handled by the department’s Specialized Investigations Division, Homicide Detail. As of Sunday evening, detectives had not announced any arrests or a suspect description, and they said the investigation remains active. The killing drew a swift response from the neighborhood and the youth sports community, which began organizing a vigil and memorial plans over the weekend.
Deputies blocked nearby roads around Mojave Vista Elementary School and Mojave Vista Park while investigators documented the scene and canvassed the area for witnesses and surveillance video. A Sheriff’s Department helicopter circled overhead for roughly 40 minutes as ground units searched nearby streets. Investigators said multiple 911 callers reported hearing gunfire shortly before deputies arrived. “He may be gone but he’s not forgotten,” Rosales’s youth football program, the SoCal Trojans, wrote in a memorial message announcing a community gathering. The department said updates will be provided as detectives verify tips and process evidence collected from the scene.
Officials identified the victim as Rosales after notifying relatives. Authorities said he suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died after being transported from the scene. Detectives did not release information about a possible motive, and they did not say whether a weapon was recovered. The department asked anyone who saw activity around Glen Canyon Lane and Burwood Avenue on Friday evening to contact homicide investigators. Neighbors described a heavy law enforcement presence late into the night as patrol units, detectives and crime scene technicians worked behind taped-off streets around the park and adjacent homes.
Rosales was known locally as a dedicated youth football player. Messages from coaches and classmates described him as a strong teammate and a steady presence at practices and games. Over the weekend, tributes circulated on social media from classmates at Oak Hills area schools and youth football organizers who referred to him by his nickname, “Tank.” Community leaders said the park and school zone where the shooting occurred are typically busy with families on weeknights, which added urgency to the sheriff’s response and the search for video from doorbell and security cameras.
Detectives with the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division took over the case shortly after patrol deputies secured the scene. The department said the investigation includes interviews with witnesses, a review of nearby surveillance footage and forensic analysis of any shell casings or ballistic evidence. The Coroner’s Division will complete examinations and official documentation as part of standard procedure. No court filings had been announced by Sunday, and the department did not indicate when additional details might be released. Officials typically issue new information after laboratory testing or once detectives can confirm leads.
Community members organized a candlelight memorial for Monday, Jan. 19, at 7:30 p.m. at TESA (High Desert) in Hesperia. Organizers encouraged friends and former teammates to bring messages and mementos honoring Rosales, and they planned to display team colors and a signed jersey. “He was a light, a straight-A student, a dedicated teammate, a respectful son,” one tribute from his school community said. Along Burwood Avenue on Saturday night, residents described seeing investigators work beneath streetlights while neighbors left flowers near the corner where deputies first arrived.
As of late Sunday, the Sheriff’s Department had not released details about a suspect or vehicle, and detectives were still asking for tips from anyone who heard or saw activity around the park Friday evening. The homicide investigation remains open, with the Specialized Investigations Division leading the case and patrol units maintaining extra presence in the area. A public memorial is set for Monday night, and investigators are expected to review additional video and witness statements this week.
