Deported felon causes chaos before a significant crash

LINDSAY, CA – A man is behind bars in South Valley, facing a slew of charges after a dramatic series of events unfolded in Lindsay. Authorities allege that 49-year-old Raphael Garcia Gaitan, a felon with a history of deportation, threatened a woman with a firearm, rammed a vehicle she was in with her child, and led police and sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase that culminated in a collision with an uninvolved driver.

The chase ended at the intersection of Hermosa and Ashland, a moment captured on camera. Matt Selena, who was inside his business, Awake Skate, witnessed the chaotic scene. “We heard the sirens, and suddenly a red Silverado was speeding down the street. The next thing we knew, there was a massive crash,” Selena recalled.

As the collision unfolded, law enforcement from Tulare County Sheriff’s Office and Lindsay Police Department descended on the scene. An unexpected hero emerged when bystander Dustin Dunny intervened, tackling the suspect and holding him until officers could take him into custody. “I’m just an ordinary person who stepped up to help,” Dunny commented.

Footage from the incident shows a woman stepping out of a damaged Honda, while officers apprehended Gaitan. The crash site was littered with debris, including pots, pans, a laundry basket, and shattered glass. The impact was so severe that a light pole was knocked down, and a police vehicle was also hit. Witnesses described the scene as reminiscent of a movie set.

Authorities are now seeking public assistance, urging anyone who recorded the incident to share their videos to help build a comprehensive case. They are also reviewing footage from police body cameras to piece together the sequence of events.

The investigation revealed that the ordeal began when Gaitan allegedly held the victim captive, locking her in a bathroom and threatening her with a gun. She managed to escape with her children, but not before Gaitan allegedly rammed their vehicle.

As the legal process unfolds, authorities are working to determine the bail amount for Gaitan, who remains in custody. The incident has left the community shaken, and more details are anticipated to emerge as the investigation continues.
