CORAL GABLES, FL – A violent shooting incident was reported in Coral Gables on Thursday, leaving a man and a woman dead, while the woman’s son was seriously injured. Miami-Dade Police had received a 911 emergency call around 9:40 a.m. from a 20-year-old man at an apartment building on the 320 block of Granello Avenue claiming he and two others had been shot. Coral Gables Police swiftly responded to the scene.
Upon the officers’ arrival, they discovered a man and a woman, both deceased from gunshot injuries and the wounded 20-year-old son. He was immediately transferred to Jackson South Hospital where he received life-saving surgery and is now stable, as per police reports.
Investigators believe that the now-deceased 61-year-old man was the perpetrator of the crime and was involved in a domestic partnership with the 41-year-old woman also found dead at the scene. The surviving 20-year-old is the woman’s son.
The local apartment complex known as Gables Ponce, situated at the same intersection, saw its vicinity transformed into a massive police operation area marked by closed-off streets.
According to police deductions, the incident was a domestic case that unfortunately escalated into violence. They assured the community that the event was isolated, hence, posed no immediate threat to public safety.
Miami-Dade Police Detective Andre Martin, during a press briefing on Thursday, underscored the gravity of the sorrowful situation and reminded the community about seeking help in situations with potential or historical domestic violence.
Additionally, some residents of the Gables Ponce apartment complex, which houses many University of Miami students, expressed their shock and sadness at the violent occurrence in their vicinity.
Coral Gables High School, located near the scene, briefly invoked security lockdown as a precautionary measure that was soon lifted. The Miami-Dade County Public Schools officials clarified the incident’s lack of connection to the high school.
