CHICAGO, IL — A Chicago police SWAT officer and at least one other person were shot Monday during an apparent domestic barricade incident at a home in the Albany Park neighborhood, according to city officials and local news reports.
The shooting was reported late Monday morning in the 4600 block of North Springfield Avenue, near Leland Avenue. Police officers, SWAT personnel, ambulances and armored vehicles gathered around the home as authorities worked to secure the area and determine whether other people remained inside.
Ald. Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez, whose 33rd Ward includes the area, told CBS News Chicago that the wounded officer was part of a SWAT team responding to a domestic incident. Chicago police had not publicly confirmed the full sequence of events or released an official account of how the officer was shot as of early Monday afternoon.
The Chicago Fire Department confirmed that an officer was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. The officer’s official condition was not immediately released. CBS News Chicago, citing a police source, reported that the officer is 45 years old, has served with the department for 20 years and was shot twice in the abdomen.
Fire officials also said another person who had been shot was taken to a hospital. That person’s identity and condition were not immediately available. ABC7 Chicago reported that four people were transported from the scene, though it was not clear whether all four had been injured.
Preliminary accounts indicated that several people were inside the home when the incident began. CBS News Chicago reported that authorities believed an armed person remained inside with an adult and a child as of about 1 p.m. One person had reportedly been released from the home.
Those details remained preliminary and had not been fully confirmed by Chicago police. Officials had not announced whether a suspect was in custody, whether the barricade had ended or who fired the shots that wounded the officer and the other person.
Video from the area showed a large emergency response and an officer being placed into an ambulance. A neighbor told CBS News Chicago that the wounded officer appeared to walk from the home with assistance from other officers.
Authorities restricted access near Springfield and Leland avenues while the SWAT response continued. Residents were urged through the visible police response to remain away from the immediate scene, though officials had not released details about the size or duration of the secured area.
The shooting remains an active and developing investigation. Chicago police had not released the officer’s name, the identities of the other people involved or a confirmed account of what led to the gunfire.
