Body of missing woman discovered at Grand Canyon National Park

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, AZ – The body of a 20-year-old woman has been found at the Grand Canyon National Park. The discovery of her remains marks the third death in the area in one week. The announcement of these findings came from the National Park Services (NPS).

The victim of the incident has been identified as Leticia A. Castillo from Albuquerque, New Mexico. She had been reported missing on August 3 after entering the national park.

After several days of searching, authorities finally found her body 150 feet below the park’s Twin Overlooks.

A relative of Castillo remembers her as a person who lit up any room she walked into. Her death has been counted as the eleventh fatality in the Grand Canyon this year. These fatalities include a 20-year-old man from North Carolina who fell 400 feet to his death, and another man who died during a BASE jump at the park.

A review by NPS of deaths in national parks between 2014 and 2019 revealed that hiking was the second deadliest activity after driving. Drowning was listed as the second-highest cause of unintentional deaths after motor vehicle crashes.
