MEMPHIS, TN – A graduation celebration took a devastating turn for a Memphis family when their daughter, 22-year-old Hannah Smith, suffered severe injuries during a trip to the Bahamas. The young graduate, who had just received her communications degree from Miles College, fell from an excursion boat, and her parents are now clinging to hope for her recovery.
Hannah had just celebrated a significant milestone, walking across the stage to receive her diploma and performing with her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta. The celebration continued with a cruise to the Bahamas with her childhood friend, Brooklyn. However, the joyful trip quickly became a nightmare.
On a Monday excursion to a private island, Hannah fell from the boat. Brooklyn recounted the harrowing moment, describing the sound of a splash and the terrifying sight of Hannah struggling in the water. Hannah disappeared briefly beneath the waves before resurfacing, reaching out for help. Witnesses on the cruise ship saw the blood in the water, signaling the severity of the accident.
Tragically, Hannah was struck by the boat’s propeller, resulting in serious injuries to her lower body. Her parents, Tracy and Marvin Smith, rushed to her side as doctors in the Bahamas worked to stabilize her condition. They were informed that her situation was critical, and the outcome uncertain.
Hannah underwent two surgeries in the Bahamas before being transported back to the United States on Wednesday. More surgeries are anticipated as she continues her fight for recovery. Her family remains hopeful, drawing strength from the prayers and support pouring in from her school, sorority sisters, and friends.
The Smith family has been overwhelmed by the community’s response, with many offering prayers and blood donations. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with the mounting medical expenses and to ensure Hannah has the best possible quality of life moving forward.
“We don’t want this accident to define our lives,” Tracy Smith shared, emphasizing their determination to support Hannah through her long journey to recovery. As the Memphis community rallies around the Smith family, they remain hopeful for Hannah’s healing and future.
