ANCHORAGE, AK – Authorities are actively searching for a brown bear involved in a mauling incident earlier today in the Stuckagain Heights area of Anchorage. The attack left a woman injured while she was hiking alone on a remote trail.
The Anchorage Fire Department reported that the woman was deep into the trail system when the bear attacked. Despite her injuries, she managed to call for help using her Apple Watch, informing responders that she had been attacked and was unable to move.
Emergency services faced significant challenges in reaching the woman due to the difficult terrain. A helicopter was deployed to airlift her to a local hospital, but her current condition remains unknown.
Megan Peters, a spokesperson for the Anchorage Fire Department, highlighted the obstacles faced by first responders. “The terrain was extremely difficult, making it crucial for paramedics to access the patient quickly,” she said.
The search for the bear is ongoing, with authorities cautioning residents and hikers in the area to remain vigilant. Officials have not yet determined what provoked the attack, but they are working to locate the animal to prevent further incidents.
Bear encounters are not uncommon in the Anchorage area, especially during this time of year when bears are more active. Residents are urged to take precautions, such as carrying bear spray and making noise while hiking to avoid surprise encounters.
Local wildlife experts are collaborating with authorities to track the bear and assess the situation. They are also using this incident to remind the public about bear safety and awareness in natural settings.
Updates on the woman’s condition and the search efforts will be provided as more information becomes available. Community members are encouraged to report any bear sightings to local authorities.
