Woman fatally shot by officer during traffic stop

LEWISVILLE, TX – A routine traffic stop escalated into a fatal officer-involved shooting early Wednesday, leaving a suspect dead and raising questions about the incident’s rapid progression. The situation unfolded shortly after midnight at the Vista Ridge Village Shopping Center, when police attempted to pull over a vehicle flagged for felony warrants.

According to authorities, the driver, a woman whose identity has not yet been confirmed, fled the scene, leading officers on a pursuit through Lewisville and Grapevine before returning to the shopping center. During the chase, the suspect’s vehicle collided with a patrol car, though no officers were injured in the crash.

The pursuit concluded near a Denny’s and Outback Steakhouse when the suspect’s vehicle came to a stop. Officers approached, intending to make an arrest. It was at this point the suspect reportedly brandished a firearm and ignored repeated commands to disarm.

Fearing for their safety, officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by law enforcement, the woman was pronounced dead at a local hospital. A handgun was recovered from her vehicle, police confirmed.

The Texas Rangers have joined the investigation, aiming to piece together the events leading up to the shooting. The medical examiner’s office is working to formally identify the suspect, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation.

The parking lot of the Vista Ridge Village Shopping Center remains cordoned off with crime scene tape as police continue their work. Shoppers and bystanders are being kept at a distance to preserve the integrity of the scene.

Chief of Police provided a brief statement, emphasizing the swift response by officers and the ongoing nature of the investigation. He noted that all standard procedures were followed and that the department is cooperating fully with external review agencies.
