Woman Charged After Deerfield Beach Carjacking, Crash Spree

Deputies say Roszetta Benjamin drove a stolen car through two crashes before a struggle over another vehicle ended inside a gas station.

DEERFIELD BEACH, FL — A 44-year-old woman faces multiple criminal charges after Broward County deputies said she drove a stolen vehicle through a series of crashes, tried to take a vehicle from a man who stopped to help and ultimately crashed into a Deerfield Beach gas station.

Roszetta Benjamin was arrested Friday after the sequence of events near Federal Highway and Hillsboro Boulevard, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Authorities have accused her of offenses including carjacking, kidnapping, grand theft and hit-and-run. A judge later set her bond at more than $104,000, according to local news reports. The allegations remain pending, and Benjamin has not been convicted of the charges.

Deputies said the incident began at about 2:47 p.m. near Northeast 54th Street and Federal Highway. Investigators said Benjamin was driving a stolen vehicle when she became involved in a crash with three other vehicles. People in those vehicles suffered minor injuries, authorities said.

Investigators said Benjamin left the first crash scene and continued driving before becoming involved in another collision at North Federal Highway and Hillsboro Boulevard. The stolen vehicle became disabled in that crash. The other driver suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to authorities.

A man then stopped to help, but deputies said Benjamin tried to take his vehicle. Authorities said the two struggled over the vehicle before Benjamin put it in drive. The vehicle then moved forward and crashed into the convenience store at a nearby Mobil gas station.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to the area shortly before 3 p.m. Emergency crews evaluated several people, and one person was taken to a hospital for additional treatment and evaluation. Officials did not immediately release that person’s condition. Initial observations indicated that the gas station building did not appear to have sustained structural damage.

Images and video from the scene showed substantial damage around the convenience store entrance. Wade Anby Beau, an employee at the gas station, told NBC 6 South Florida that he heard a loud crash and went to see what had happened. He said coolers fell and glass was scattered inside the store, requiring cleanup after the collision.

Deputies took Benjamin into custody at the gas station. During a court appearance Saturday, a Broward County judge found probable cause on several charges, according to Local 10. The station reported that Benjamin declined to appear on camera during the hearing. Local reports differed on some details of her initial custody status as additional charges were considered.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remained active. Authorities had not publicly released a detailed account explaining the circumstances surrounding the original vehicle theft or the specific conduct underlying the kidnapping allegation as of Sunday. Any final charges and future court proceedings will be determined through the Broward County court system.
