Wife shot to death while sitting in car, husband confesses to killing her

A Louisiana man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder after allegedly shooting and killing his wife. The suspect, identified as Gregory Chapman, confessed to the crime. The tragic incident took place in front of their home, leaving their 4-year-old daughter traumatized. Chapman’s defense attorney revealed that he had been struggling with mental illness, adding another layer of complexity to this heartbreaking case.

Gregory Chapman, 57, is currently in jail on second-degree murder charges following the death of his wife, Tomika Chapman, 47. Due to being on suicide watch, his bond hearing was rescheduled, and he was unable to attend the court hearing. Online court docket information indicates that his bail has been set at $750,000, with his next court hearing scheduled for November 8th.

According to reports, Tomika Chapman was shot in her car in front of their home on Tuesday. Later that evening, Gregory Chapman confessed to the crime. The couple’s 4-year-old daughter was brought home by her aunt after her parents failed to pick her up from school, only to discover the tragic scene. The motive behind the shooting appears to be an argument that escalated into gunfire when Tomika allegedly threatened her husband’s life.

In court, Gregory Chapman’s defense attorney mentioned his client’s ongoing struggle with mental illness and the turbulent nature of his relationship with his wife. The couple had been together for 30 years and had a history of domestic abuse allegations. Tomika had recently filed a restraining order against her husband, and court records indicate that he had filed for divorce at least twice.

Neighbors recounted the horrifying moments leading up to the shooting. Debra Barbain-Johnson, a friend of the victim who lived on the same street, heard gunshots and saw Gregory Chapman pacing in the driveway. She also heard the screams of Chapman’s sister and young daughter. Barbain-Johnson expressed her regret at not being able to prevent the tragedy and revealed that Tomika had confided in her about the abuse she endured.
