NONTHABURI, THAILAND — Video published after a deadly school shooting outside Bangkok shows the 14-year-old student authorities say carried out an attack that began at his grandparents’ home and continued at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, where teachers, staff and a student were killed.
The shooting on Friday, Aug. 7, has left nine people dead, including the teenage shooter, after a 12-year-old girl died from her injuries the following day, according to police and reports from Reuters. Authorities said the teenager first killed his grandparents at their home before going to the school in Nonthaburi province, northwest of Bangkok. Five teachers and school officials were killed there before the boy died by suicide.
CNN published footage it described as showing the 14-year-old boy accused of carrying out the school attack. Separate video from the school showed students seeking safety as gunfire was reported elsewhere on the campus. The footage adds a visual record to witness accounts of students and teachers hiding in classrooms and trying to secure doors while the shooting unfolded.
Students told Reuters that the first sounds of gunfire caused confusion because some initially thought the noise might have come from nearby construction. As more shots were heard, teachers moved students into classrooms. Some students pushed desks against doors, switched off lights and waited for information through school messaging groups while the attacker moved through the building.
Authorities said the teenager used a firearm belonging to his grandfather. Police and other officials were still investigating how the attack developed and what led to it. Officials have discussed possible school-related stress, but investigators have not announced a definitive motive, and claims about what drove the 14-year-old should not be treated as established fact while the inquiry continues.
The casualty count changed after the initial attack as critically injured victims received hospital treatment. Police said Saturday that a 12-year-old girl had died from her wounds, bringing the overall death toll to nine when the shooter is included. Thailand’s Health Ministry said other victims remained hospitalized, including several in critical condition.
The shooting was one of Thailand’s deadliest acts of mass violence in recent years and renewed scrutiny of firearm access in the country. The fact that authorities said the weapon was legally registered to the teenager’s grandfather has also focused attention on how firearms are stored and accessed inside homes.
Debsirin Nonthaburi School serves thousands of students in the Bangkok metropolitan area. Officials suspended in-person classes following the attack as the school community mourned those killed and authorities continued investigating the shootings at both the family home and the campus.
Police continued examining the circumstances surrounding the attack, including the teenager’s access to the firearm and the sequence of events before he arrived at school. Officials had not publicly established a final motive as of Sunday, and several injured victims remained under medical care.
