SILVER SPRING, MD – A grieving mother stood solemnly in Long Branch Park, remembering her 17-year-old son, Charlie Lucas, who was fatally shot there. Just days before, Montgomery County police reported that another person was critically injured in the same incident. The tragic event unfolded on a Friday evening, leaving the community in shock.
Two suspects, Juan Carlos Gutierrez Hernandez, 18, and Johnny Rosales Castillo, 20, were quickly apprehended. Authorities have tied them to another murder last month, for which they were already suspects. Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy detailed the charges they now face, including murder, attempted murder, and various firearm offenses.
The investigation traces back to an altercation at a 7-Eleven on University Boulevard on August 19. It was there that the suspects reportedly clashed with a group of teenagers. Shortly afterward, officers discovered 17-year-old Gerald Murillo with a gunshot wound a block away. Sadly, Murillo did not survive his injuries.
While a clear motive remains elusive, investigators are exploring potential gang ties. Accounts suggest the conflict may have been sparked by a perceived slight—a mere exchange of looks at the convenience store. This seemingly minor incident escalated into a deadly chase and shooting.
Weeks later, the spotlight returned to Long Branch Park, where Lucas lost his life. The swift police response led to the execution of a no-knock search warrant at the suspects’ residence in Silver Spring. This operation resulted in the recovery of two handguns, solidifying the case against the accused.
Prosecutors expressed regret that the suspects were not apprehended before the second homicide, acknowledging the gravity of the situation. Both individuals remain in custody without bond as the legal process unfolds.
The community grapples with the loss of two young lives, united in mourning and seeking answers. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on preventing further violence and bringing justice to the victims’ families.
