RIVERDALE PARK, MD – A heartrending incident occurred near a Maryland elementary school on Monday morning, leading to the death of two children, local officials reported.
The fatal event unfolded as two students of Riverdale Elementary School were on their way to school around 8 a.m., when a vehicle struck them. The driver involved stayed at the scene, according to a social media update from Riverdale Park Mayor Alan Thompson.
The accident occurred at the intersection of Riverdale and Taylor roads, in close proximity to the school, as stated in a town police post on social media.
In response to the incident, the school administration confirmed the occurrence of the fatal pedestrian accident during the morning arrival time. They also provided parents with the option to pick up their children early from school.
The town of Riverdale Park, situated in Prince George’s County and home to about 7,000 people, lies a few miles northeast of the Washington, D.C. border. The county police have taken up the responsibility of investigating the incident.
