Police released surveillance images after Henry Fonseca said two men attacked him when he asked them to move vehicles blocking his car.
NEWARK, NJ — Police are searching for two men accused of beating a 43-year-old Newark resident during an early-morning dispute over double-parked vehicles that were blocking his car, according to authorities and local news reports.
Henry Fonseca said the confrontation happened around 1:30 a.m. Aug. 10 on Parker Street as he was preparing to leave for his overnight warehouse job. Police released surveillance video and images of the men on Aug. 20 as investigators sought help identifying them. The latest reports did not indicate that either man had been arrested.
Fonseca said two vehicles had been parked next to his car in a way that prevented him from leaving. He told WABC-TV that he honked his horn and contacted police because he needed the vehicles moved. According to Fonseca, the men who owned the vehicles came outside while he was still speaking with police.
Police said the confrontation then became physical. Investigators said Fonseca was punched in the head and face. Surveillance footage released by authorities showed two men confronting and striking him as other people tried to intervene. The men left before officers arrived, according to reporting from NBC New York.
Fonseca told WABC that one man struck him from behind while the other attacked him from the front. He said his wife tried to intervene and was also struck. Fonseca said he remained on the phone with police during the assault and described what was happening.
The Newark Department of Public Safety said Fonseca suffered cuts to his nose and forehead and was taken to University Hospital for evaluation. Fonseca later said he also injured fingers on his right hand. Reports published after the attack said he had not yet returned to work and was being evaluated for possible surgery on his hand.
Fonseca also told Telemundo 47 that one of the men told him he had a weapon during the confrontation. That claim came from Fonseca’s account; authorities did not announce that a weapon was displayed or recovered. Fonseca also described the men as intoxicated, but police did not independently confirm that assertion in the reports reviewed.
Police released screenshots taken from surveillance footage as part of the effort to identify the two men. The Newark Department of Public Safety described the case as an assault in the 100 block of Parker Street and said the victim had been punched in the head and face.
Authorities had not publicly identified the two men in the latest available reports. Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda asked for information that could help investigators determine their identities, and the investigation remained open.
