NEW YORK, NY – In a chaotic scene that unfolded in the Bronx on Tuesday afternoon, a police chase involving a stolen vehicle ended in a crash that sent two innocent bystanders to the hospital. The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. on Seward Avenue near Rosedale Avenue in the Soundview neighborhood.
Authorities reported that a suspect driving a stolen car attempted to evade police pursuit when he collided with a series of parked vehicles. The impact was so severe that it damaged three cars, with the first being pushed onto the sidewalk, leaving visible tire marks. The collision caused a domino effect, shoving the second car into a third vehicle.
Robert Perez, 66, was inside the third car, managing alternate side street parking when the crash occurred. “It pushed me six feet,” Perez recounted, describing how he was thrown forward by the force. He sustained injuries to his leg and back and was taken to the hospital, where he received a cane and X-rays. Despite the ordeal, Perez expressed gratitude for not suffering any broken bones.
Another victim, a woman who shared an ambulance with Perez, returned to the scene later to assess the damage to her vehicle, discovering that her car’s hatch wouldn’t close. She remained in shock, unsure of the full extent of her injuries.
The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Angel Colon, fled on foot following the crash but was apprehended a short time later near the Soundview public housing complex. He now faces charges of grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.
Witnesses, including 10-year-old Alvin Perez, described the scene as the car sped down the street moments before the crash. Alvin, who was at home playing with his toys, recalled the sound of the speeding car and the subsequent police pursuit.
Fortunately, no children were in harm’s way during the incident. The community remains on edge, grappling with the aftermath of the crash and the disruptions caused by the reckless actions of the suspect.
