Police said the shooting at Fairlane Town Center followed a fight between two groups who knew each other.
DEARBORN, MI — Two people were killed and a third was injured Friday after a fight inside Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn escalated into gunfire, sending shoppers running and drawing a large police response to the suburban Detroit mall.
Dearborn police said the shooting was not believed to be random. Investigators were working Friday to identify everyone involved, interview witnesses and review what happened inside the shopping center near Evergreen Road and Michigan Avenue. The mall was evacuated and remained closed while officers secured the building and gathered evidence.
The shooting happened early Friday afternoon, with police and emergency crews called to the mall as reports of gunfire spread through the shopping center. Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said the violence began with a confrontation between two groups of young people who knew each other. “The loss of life is a tragedy,” Shahin said, offering condolences to the families of those killed. One victim died at the scene, and a second died after being taken to a hospital, police said. A third person who was shot was also taken for medical care.
Police said the victims were males believed to be in their late teens to early 20s. Their names had not been released Friday while authorities worked to notify relatives. Shahin said people from both groups had handguns when the fight broke out. Investigators had not released a full account of who fired, how many shots were fired or whether more than one gun was used. Several people connected to the confrontation were being questioned at the police station, but authorities said no arrests had been announced immediately after the shooting.
The shooting also injured a person outside the mall who was struck by a vehicle while trying to flee, police said. That injury was described as separate from the gunfire. The scene caused a lockdown at the mall and at nearby Henry Ford Medical Center Fairlane as officers worked through the building. Michigan State Police assisted Dearborn officers, and local, regional and federal law enforcement agencies responded. Officials asked people to stay away from the area while the scene remained active.
Fairlane Town Center is a large enclosed mall in Dearborn, about nine miles west of Detroit. It has more than 125 stores and restaurants, according to the mall’s public description. The shooting unfolded one day before the Fourth of July, a busy time for shopping, travel and public gatherings. Police said the mall is generally considered safe and described Friday’s shooting as tied to a dispute, not a broader threat to the public.
Investigators were expected to continue collecting video, interviewing witnesses and sorting out the roles of those involved. Police had not announced charges, named a suspect or released the condition of the surviving gunshot victim by Friday evening. Shahin said the case remained active and that police would work with prosecutors after investigators determine what evidence supports possible charges. The mall was expected to stay closed while police finished processing the scene.
Witness videos posted online showed people running from the shopping center as panic spread after the shots. Officers moved shoppers and workers out as they cleared stores and common areas. Mall security did not issue a public statement by Friday evening. Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud also told the public to avoid the area while police worked. By evening, authorities said the immediate danger had passed, but the investigation was still moving through witness accounts, physical evidence and surveillance footage.
The case stood Friday night as a double-fatal shooting with one surviving gunshot victim and a separate injury outside the mall. Police had not set a time for the next public briefing, but further updates were expected after relatives are notified and investigators review the evidence.
