Police Shoot Attempted Murder Suspect Inside Thousand Oaks Hospital

The man was in custody after an early morning stabbing investigation in Simi Valley.

THOUSAND OAKS, CA — A Simi Valley police officer shot a 46-year-old attempted murder suspect Thursday inside Los Robles Regional Medical Center after officers said the man was taken there for treatment following a domestic violence stabbing investigation.

The shooting drew a large law enforcement response to one of Ventura County’s major hospitals and prompted separate investigations by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office and the Simi Valley Police Department. Officials said no patients, staff members or visitors were injured. The suspect, whose name was not immediately released, remained in police custody and was listed in stable condition after being treated by hospital staff.

The case began before dawn Thursday in Simi Valley. Police said officers were called at about 1:27 a.m. or 1:30 a.m. to the 2000 block of Clover Street after a family member reported trouble at a home. Officers found a husband and wife with stab wounds. Investigators said the husband was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and domestic violence. The woman underwent surgery and was expected to survive. Simi Valley police Sgt. Rick Morton said investigators were still sorting out what happened inside the home, including whether one person was the aggressor or whether some wounds were self-inflicted.

After the Clover Street response, the man was taken to Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks for further treatment and evaluation, police said. He remained under constant supervision by a Simi Valley police officer while he was hospitalized. Authorities said the officer later believed the suspect needed medical attention and asked hospital staff to help. During that medical assessment, an incident occurred and the officer opened fire at about 12:20 p.m. Officials have not released the full sequence of events, and they have not said whether the suspect had a weapon. The officer was not hurt.

Ventura County sheriff’s Capt. Rob Yoos said the suspect was struck by gunfire, treated immediately and remained stable. “The suspect was struck by gunfire, was treated by medical staff, is currently in stable condition and is still in custody of the Simi Valley Police Department,” Yoos said. The shooting was reported inside a medical center building on the Los Robles campus near Janss and Lynn roads. Emergency vehicles and police units gathered outside the hospital as investigators secured the scene and began interviews.

Los Robles Regional Medical Center said the hospital continued operating after the shooting. “All patients, colleagues and visitors are safe, and our hospital is operating as normal,” the hospital said in a statement. The medical center is a key hospital for the Conejo Valley and lists a 24-hour emergency department, a Level II trauma center, a comprehensive stroke center, a birthing center and a neonatal intensive care unit among its services. The shooting happened in a place normally built for treatment, not police gunfire, which added urgency to the response from agencies across Ventura County.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting because the officer who fired was from the Simi Valley Police Department. The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office is taking part in the review, a common step after police shootings. Simi Valley police said they also will conduct a separate investigation. The original stabbing case remains open, and the suspect’s potential charges will depend on the findings from the Clover Street scene, medical records, witness statements and any later review by prosecutors.

Officials released only limited details Thursday night and early Friday. The suspect’s name, the officer’s name and the officer’s assignment were not immediately made public. Authorities also had not released body camera video, hospital surveillance details or a detailed account of the moments before shots were fired. Investigators were expected to review police reports, medical staff accounts, hospital security records and physical evidence from the room or area where the shooting happened. The woman injured in Simi Valley remained a central witness and victim in the attempted murder investigation.

Outside the hospital, the response was visible in a normally busy medical district. Patrol vehicles lined nearby areas as officers and deputies moved through the campus. Hospital staff continued working as the investigation unfolded. No evacuation or continuing threat was announced by sheriff’s officials. The scene reflected two linked investigations unfolding in one day: an early morning stabbing at a Simi Valley home and a midday police shooting at a Thousand Oaks hospital where the suspect had been taken for care.

The suspect remained hospitalized, stable and in custody as of the latest official updates. The next milestones are expected to include additional investigative findings from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, a prosecutorial review by the district attorney and charging decisions tied to the Simi Valley stabbing case.
