Police responded to gunfire at a Northridge strip mall late Friday after officers were called to a large gathering in the area.
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — At least two people were killed in a shooting late Friday at a strip mall near California State University, Northridge, prompting a large police and emergency response as investigators worked to determine what led to the violence.
The shooting occurred in the area of Nordhoff Street and Reseda Boulevard, close to the university campus. Los Angeles police had responded to a 911 call about a large party at the shopping center around 11 p.m. Friday when officers heard gunfire, according to reports citing authorities. Police then moved into the area as firefighters and paramedics also responded.
Authorities confirmed that two people were killed. Their identities had not been publicly released as of Saturday morning. It was not immediately clear whether other people suffered gunshot wounds or other injuries. NBC Los Angeles reported, citing Los Angeles Police Department sources, that at least two people had been shot and one person had been stabbed during the incident.
Aerial video from the scene showed a heavy law enforcement presence around the shopping center, with numerous police cruisers and emergency vehicles gathered near the businesses. Officers established a large perimeter as they investigated the shooting and worked to determine whether anyone involved remained in the area.
Several people were seen being detained after the shooting, but authorities had not announced any arrests as of Saturday morning. Police also had not released a description of a suspected shooter. The reason for the shooting and the circumstances that led to the gunfire remained under investigation.
The shooting happened near the Cal State Northridge campus rather than being reported on the university grounds. Early reports placed the investigation at a nearby commercial shopping area. Authorities had not announced that the university itself was the site of the shooting.
The large gathering was an early focus of the investigation. Police were responding to a report about a party at the shopping center when officers arriving in the area heard gunshots, according to ABC News. Investigators had not publicly said whether the victims attended the gathering or what connection, if any, the shooting had to the event.
Police had also not released the victims’ ages or other identifying information. No motive had been announced, and investigators had not publicly established how many people fired weapons. Authorities continued gathering evidence and interviewing people who were at or near the shopping center.
The investigation remained active Saturday, with key questions about the shooter, the circumstances surrounding the gunfire and the full number of people injured still unresolved. Authorities had not announced an arrest or identified a suspect as of the latest reports.
