Two killed, five injured in Indianapolis mass shooting

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Tragedy struck early Saturday morning in downtown Indianapolis when a shooting left seven people injured, two fatally. The incident occurred near the intersection of Washington and Illinois streets, prompting a swift response from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD).

IMPD Chief Chris Bailey addressed the media shortly before 4 a.m., expressing his frustration and urging parents and guardians to take responsibility for their children. “A kid is dead tonight,” Bailey lamented, emphasizing the need for community involvement in preventing such tragedies.

The victims include three juveniles and three adults. One of the deceased is confirmed to be a juvenile, while authorities are still working to identify the second fatality. The scene remained active for hours as investigators combed the area for evidence, with a significant section of Illinois Street cordoned off.

Officers, already in the vicinity responding to a separate disturbance, heard gunfire around 1:30 a.m. and quickly arrived at the scene. They discovered six individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. One victim died at the scene, while five others were transported to the hospital. A seventh victim later sought medical attention independently.

As the investigation continues, several individuals have been detained for questioning, and multiple firearms have been recovered. Chief Bailey expressed dismay over the violence, especially during a holiday weekend expected to draw thousands to the city.

“This kind of violence is unacceptable,” Bailey stated. “We spent the night trying to prevent these incidents, and it’s disheartening to see this happen.”

The incident has cast a shadow over the Fourth of July weekend festivities, with many downtown for celebrations and fireworks. Chief Bailey reiterated the importance of parental guidance and community vigilance to curb such violence.

The investigation remains ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
