Two damaged vehicles were found after gunfire erupted along Crane Street, while investigators worked to determine who fired the shots.
HOUSTON, TX — Three men were wounded early Wednesday in a shooting in Houston’s Kashmere Gardens area that left two vehicles crashed and marked by bullet holes, according to the Houston Police Department.
The shooting happened about 1:15 a.m. Aug. 19 along Crane Street near East Lane. Police found a man in his 40s who had been shot in the face near the freeway feeder road and another man in his 20s who also had been shot in the face near a vehicle that had crashed into a ditch. A third man, also in his 40s, told investigators he was shot in the leg after getting out of his vehicle when he heard gunfire.
Investigators found two damaged vehicles connected to the scene. One vehicle had crashed near the U.S. 59 feeder road, while another overturned in a ditch along Crane Street. Police said both vehicles had bullet holes. Weapons also were found in one of the vehicles, but authorities had not determined how the guns were connected to the shooting.
Houston Police Lt. R. Willkens said a witness reported that one of the injured men had been driving along Crane Street before the shooting and had displayed a pistol to several people. Investigators were still trying to determine what happened after that and who was responsible for firing the shots. Police had not announced a motive.
Investigators believe much of the gunfire occurred near the vehicle that overturned in the ditch. One of the men who was shot in the face was found near that area, while the other was found with the vehicle that crashed near the feeder road.
The man wounded in the leg told police he heard gunfire, got out of his vehicle and was then struck. He was able to leave the area and reach his brother’s home. His brother later took him to a hospital, according to investigators. The other two injured men also were transported to hospitals. Their conditions had not been publicly released.
Police used a helicopter to search the surrounding neighborhood for anyone who might have fled after the shooting. No suspect was taken into custody during the initial investigation. Authorities also had not ruled out whether any of the injured men could have been involved in the exchange of gunfire.
The identities of the three injured men had not been released. Investigators continued examining the damaged vehicles, weapons and witness accounts as they worked to establish the sequence of events and determine who fired at whom.
The shooting remained under investigation Thursday. Police had not announced any arrests or publicly identified a suspected shooter as investigators continued working to determine what led to the gunfire.
