Three injured, including officer, in shootout

DETROIT, MI – A police officer in Detroit was injured in a shooting incident that took place in a residential building late on Thursday night. Two suspects were also found injured due to gunshot wounds, according to the local police.

James White, the Detroit Police Chief, confirmed that the officer and the two suspects are expected to survive their injuries. The condition of the officer and the suspects, who are currently in the hospital, was not disclosed.

The incident unfolded after 11 p.m. when officers responded to a muted Shotspotter alert indicating gunfire within a house on the west side of the city. Upon arrival, the officers could hear active shooting from inside the house.

White detailed that the officers entered the house and proceeded to the second floor. The first two officers to ascend the stairs encountered a suspect who opened fire on them, resulting in one officer being shot.

The second officer retaliated by firing back and swiftly moving his injured colleague out of the line of fire. Another officer also returned fire, added White.

Two suspects were discovered in the house with gunshot wounds, although it remains unclear whether their injuries were inflicted by the police or by another individual who was firing inside the house.

White praised the bravery of the officers who intervened in what he believed could have been a robbery or a murder in progress. “The officers were heroic to go into an active shooter situation. It appears they were clearly disrupting either a robbery-murder or a murder,” he said.
