JOPPA, MD – An altercation in the boys’ restroom of Joppatowne High School resulted in a fatal shooting incident on Friday, wherein a 16-year-old student allegedly shot and killed 15-year-old Warren Curtis Grant. The victim was rendered immediate care by school nurses, teachers, and the principal before being airlifted to a trauma center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, tried to escape and seek refuge in nearby houses but was caught in minutes by the police, largely due to community members’ assistance. The officials have yet to recover the weapon, and it is believed that only one shot was fired.
The shooting took place on the teen suspect’s first day at school, four days into the academic year. The youth is not new to law enforcement authorities, who have been involved in more than ten incidents since the start of this year relating to him being a victim, witness, or suspect.
The tragic incident led to a rapid response from law enforcement personnel, with over 100 police officers deployed to the school located about 35 miles northeast of Baltimore.
According to Harford County Public Schools Superintendent Sean Bulson, the school community is heartbroken to join the list of institutions enduring such traumatic incidents. He stated that authorities would undertake all required measures to prevent such incidents in the future. The school does not currently have metal detectors installed.
