OAK CREEK, WI – A fatal swimming incident took place in Lake Michigan on Wednesday evening, resulting in the death of a 17-year-old boy and leaving another in critical condition. Mohamad Hassan was swimming near Bender Park with his brother and another teenager when a riptide trapped them, according to investigators.
Rescue crews succeeded in pulling Hassan from the water. However, despite their efforts, they were unable to revive him after they rescued him.
The deceased teen’s brother was also caught in the riptide. He is currently being treated for his injuries in the hospital. The third teenager in the incident managed to escape the dangerous waters without any injuries.
Oak Creek Fire Department Battalion Chief Scott Kasten emphasized the importance of safety while swimming. “Swimmers, beachgoers need to know their limitations. They also need to be mindful of what the water conditions are…they need to be aware of and pay attention to recommendations from the experts,” he said.
The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, Oak Creek first responders, and the U.S. Coast Guard arrived on the scene around 8:25 p.m. after they received reports of a possible drowning. It’s important to note that there are no lifeguards on duty at Bender Park Beach.
