Teen charged after Houston truck driver shot

Deputies say a single round from a sedan wounded a 36-year-old big-rig driver during a pre-dawn confrontation.

HOUSTON, TX — A 15-year-old boy was arrested Wednesday morning after authorities say he shot an 18-wheeler driver along the East Sam Houston Parkway North feeder road, critically injuring the 36-year-old man as the vehicles moved through northeast Harris County shortly after 5 a.m.

Deputies said the teen was booked on an aggravated assault charge while investigators worked to confirm what led to the roadside gunfire and whether additional charges are warranted. The shooting, which unfolded near the 11570 block of East Sam Houston Parkway North by Garrett Road, came after the sedan’s occupants told authorities their side mirror was clipped by the tractor-trailer. The case is in its early stages, with the driver hospitalized following surgery and sheriff’s detectives collecting statements, dash-camera footage and physical evidence. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez called the act reckless and said his office is reviewing all available video.

Investigators said the encounter began around 5:18 a.m., when a silver sedan driven by a 23-year-old woman and carrying her 15-year-old brother pulled alongside the tractor-trailer on the Beltway 8 feeder. In the effort to get the truck to stop after the reported mirror scrape, authorities said, the teen climbed partly out of the passenger-side window and fired a single round over the roof of the sedan toward the rig’s cab. The bullet pierced the truck’s door and struck the driver as he continued forward, according to deputies. “This kind of behavior is dangerous and unacceptable on our roadways,” Gonzalez said in a briefing. First responders stabilized the victim at the scene and transported him for emergency care; he remained in critical but stable condition after surgery, authorities said.

Officials identified the trucker only by age and gender and did not release his name pending family notifications. Detectives said they recovered the involved vehicles and were processing them for ballistics and trace evidence. Investigators are reviewing video from the truck’s onboard camera and nearby businesses along the feeder road to map each vehicle’s movements before the shot. The 23-year-old driver of the sedan was detained for questioning and released pending further investigation, deputies said. It was not immediately known who owned the handgun, whether it was legally possessed, or where it was acquired. No other injuries were reported. Morning traffic in the area slowed as lanes were restricted for several hours while crime scene units documented the corridor and marked shell casing locations.

The location — a busy stretch of the East Sam Houston Parkway North near Garrett Road — is lined with warehouses, service shops and early-shift commuter traffic. Deputies said pre-dawn light and steady flow at that hour complicated the response. In recent years, the sheriff’s office has repeatedly warned about the risks of so-called roadway retaliation incidents, which can escalate from minor collisions into violence. Records show multiple high-profile shootings tied to traffic disputes in the county over the past two years. Wednesday’s shooting follows that pattern, investigators said, with an initial property-damage complaint turning into a serious violent offense. Authorities said they are compiling comparable cases to better understand how often minor crashes escalate into assaults and to identify any shared factors in time, location or participant behavior.

Detectives placed the teen in juvenile custody on a count of aggravated assault, a felony. Under state law, prosecutors will determine whether to pursue additional enhancements once they review the evidence, including trajectory analysis, potential firearm recovery and statements from both motorists. A probable cause review was expected within 24 hours at the juvenile intake facility in Harris County. The district attorney’s office said the case file will include dash-camera footage, 911 recordings and the initial accident assessment regarding the sedan’s damaged mirror. If the truck driver’s condition changes, charges could be amended, officials said. Investigators planned to return to the scene to canvass for more surveillance video and to reconstruct the path of both vehicles along the feeder and frontage roads.

As daylight returned, workers at nearby shops described a sudden halt of early-shift traffic and flashing lights lining the feeder lanes. A supervisor with the trucking company said the driver had recently started the route and was considered reliable and careful, adding that the dash-camera system captured part of the encounter. “It’s hard to process how fast it went from a routine morning to a life-or-death situation,” the supervisor said. A passerby who stopped after hearing the report of a single shot said he saw the rig slow and drift toward the edge of the roadway as deputies arrived. Sheriff Gonzalez said he had spoken with the driver’s employer and relatives and emphasized that investigators are tracing the sequence from the reported mirror clip to the moment the shot was fired.

By late afternoon, authorities said the victim remained hospitalized in critical but stable condition, and the juvenile suspect was held pending a probable cause review. Detectives planned to release additional details, including the make and caliber of the firearm if recovered, after lab processing. The next update is expected Thursday, Jan. 8, from the sheriff’s office.
