POWDER SPRINGS, GA – An 18-year-old is now facing a murder charge following a fatal shooting at a prom after-party, marking a tragic turn of events in this suburban community. The incident unfolded just after midnight on Sunday, less than a mile from the Powder Springs Police Department, in the parking lot of West Cobb Plaza, a bustling shopping area on New Macklin Road.
The suspect, identified as Carlos Diaz, 18, of Smyrna, is accused of shooting and killing 17-year-old Ashton Hornsby, also from Smyrna. Authorities have charged Diaz with felony murder, aggravated assault, and a weapons violation in connection with the deadly encounter.
According to warrants obtained by the media, Diaz was among several attendees at a house party following a local high school’s prom. However, it remains unclear which school hosted the prom. Police reports suggest that Diaz feared Hornsby might attack him due to a previous altercation between the two.
The confrontation reportedly escalated when Diaz allegedly pointed a gun at Hornsby, who responded by lifting his shirt, a gesture that police interpreted as indicative of carrying a weapon. In response, Diaz fired two shots, fatally wounding the teenager.
The Cobb County School District, where Hornsby was a former student at Campbell High School, issued a letter to families expressing condolences and offering support. The district has made counselors and crisis team members available to students in need and is encouraging the community to report any safety concerns.
Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could further illuminate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. They urge anyone with relevant knowledge to contact the police.
As the investigation continues, the community is left grappling with the aftermath of violence that has cast a shadow over what should have been a celebratory occasion for local students.
