CHICAGO, IL – Following a harrowing incident in the Lakeview neighborhood, a 25-year-old second-grade teacher, identified as Eliza, recounted her narrow escape from a shooting that occurred late Sunday night.
Eliza, who requested her last name be withheld for safety reasons, remains in shock as she processes what happened. “That’s probably the biggest thing I think about, like, if I was leaning a little bit further this way, I might be not here,” she said.
The incident unfolded around 2 a.m. after Eliza had spent a night out at a karaoke bar with friends. She had just called a rideshare for the short trip home. As the car was stopped in traffic near Belmont and Sheffield, shots were fired.
Though in shock, Eliza realized almost immediately that she had been grazed by a bullet near her forehead, narrowly missing her eye. According to police, the gunfire came from a dark-colored vehicle. While they collected multiple shell casings from the scene, the shooter has yet to be apprehended.
Eliza’s father, Thomas, expressed his concerns about the safety of young adults in the city. Both Eliza and her family have become painfully aware of the personal impact of gun violence.
Another victim, a young man in a different vehicle, was also shot but is expected to recover.
