Stepfather arrested after putting dog leash on 6-year-old and dragging him around the yard

MIAMI, FL – Disturbing home surveillance footage has surfaced, allegedly showing a six-year-old boy being abused by his stepfather. The video, obtained by authorities, purportedly captures the young child with a dog leash around his neck, directed by his stepfather, Zachary Perez, 42.

The footage, difficult to watch, reveals the boy being dragged by the leash, his head snapping backward and forward before he collapses to the ground. In another clip, Perez is seen kicking the child as he passes by in the living room.

According to the State Attorney’s office, the videos document several incidents of abuse. In one bedroom recording, Perez allegedly kicks the boy again, demanding he put on his shoes, using harsh language. The child reportedly suffered a kick to the stomach and was struck with a tree branch, leading to visible injuries.

Perez was taken into custody in May, facing charges of aggravated child abuse with torture. The child was left with swollen eyes and marks across his body, including his neck, authorities reported.

Amanda Altman of Christy House, a Children’s Advocacy Center, expressed concern over the psychological and physical trauma the child likely endured. “It’s hard to fathom what drove this former Marine to such actions,” Altman remarked, suggesting that unresolved trauma from Perez’s past might have influenced his behavior.

Prosecutors depict Perez as a volatile individual with a history of violence. Court documents reveal a pattern of domestic abuse, including accusations from his own 14-year-old daughter. Despite claims from Perez’s defense that the boy’s mother condoned the discipline, prosecutors have found no supporting evidence.

Perez maintains his innocence, having entered a not guilty plea. The court has ordered him to avoid any contact with the child.
