A Chevy Camaro crashed through a backyard fence near Heritage Trace Parkway as three young children played only feet away.
FORT WORTH, TX — Three young children escaped injury after a speeding driver lost control of a Chevrolet Camaro, smashed through a backyard fence and sent debris toward a family swimming pool in north Fort Worth, according to police and local news reports.
The crash happened around 7 p.m. Sunday near the 1500 block of Heritage Trace in an area where residents have raised concerns about speeding. Fort Worth police said the Camaro was traveling on Heritage Trace Parkway when the driver lost control. The vehicle went through a wooden fence, struck a concrete pillar and bounced back toward the roadway before stopping. The children, including a 2-year-old girl and 5-year-old twin boys, were not injured.
Surveillance cameras at the home recorded the close call. Video showed a young child moving away moments before the vehicle crashed through the fence and pieces of the damaged barrier scattered across the backyard. The family said all three children had been playing in or around the pool at the time. The parents quickly gathered the children after the crash before the father went to check on the people in the car.
Fort Worth police said the Camaro carried a driver and one passenger. The passenger was taken to a hospital after the crash. Authorities had not released an updated condition for that person. Police did not identify the driver publicly. FOX 4 reported that the driver was cited for reckless driving.
The family later described the crash as a frightening example of how dangerous driving can threaten people even when they are inside their own property. In a statement reported by CBS News Texas, the family said the incident showed how quickly reckless driving could become a tragedy. The family said its main concern was preventing another household from facing a similar close call.
The crash also renewed concerns among nearby residents about traffic speeds along Heritage Trace Parkway. Neighbor Toni Gunter told FOX 4 that dangerous driving has been an ongoing problem in the area. The collision left a wooden fence destroyed, damaged a stone or concrete support and scattered debris near the backyard where the children had been playing.
Fort Worth City Council member Charlie Lauersdorf, who represents District 4, visited the area after the crash. He said speeding and distracted driving have been concerns for residents and city officials. Lauersdorf said public safety was more important than the property damage and that officials needed to determine what changes could reduce the risk of another crash.
Lauersdorf said one immediate possibility is adding a stop sign near the crash site. He told CBS News Texas that he hoped a stop sign could be installed within 30 days, if not sooner. He also said officials could conduct a broader traffic study to determine whether additional measures, including a traffic signal, would be appropriate for the roadway.
No injuries to the three children were reported. Police had not released the driver’s identity or announced additional enforcement action beyond the reckless-driving citation as of the latest reports. The passenger’s condition also remained unclear, while city officials were considering possible traffic-safety changes near the neighborhood.
