Shooting on school campus leaves one student dead

DARLINGTON, SC – A horrific shooting unfolded on a Darlington County school campus Tuesday afternoon, resulting in the death of a student. The incident took place in the parking lot of the Darlington-Lee Adult Education campus, located on Magnolia Street, according to the Darlington County School District.

Local law enforcement responded to reports of gunfire around 12:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a male student suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to a hospital that was located nearby, the student succumbed to his injuries. The State Law Enforcement Division was called in by the Darlington Police Department to assist with the ongoing investigation.

The shooting took place in close proximity to a local church, led by Pastor Wesley Belin. The pastor expressed his deep concern about the escalating violence in the area.

The identity of the deceased student has yet to be disclosed by the Darlington County Coroner’s Office. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the school district implemented a secure status across all district buildings and schools in the area, restricting entry and exit. This measure was lifted in time for school dismissal.

Dr. Tim Newman, the superintendent of the Darlington County School District, expressed his sorrow over the incident. He extended his condolences to the student’s family and expressed gratitude to the law enforcement officers and school staff who responded promptly to the situation.

The Darlington Police Department has assured the public that there is no immediate threat to the surrounding area. The investigation into the circumstances that surround the shooting is still underway.
