Shooting at gas station kills 17-year-old boy

ROUND LAKE, IL – A 17-year-old boy was fatally shot on Wednesday night, prompting an investigation by the Round Lake police. The incident occurred around 8:20 p.m., with authorities responding to a 911 call near Cedar Lake and Rollins roads. The Lake County Coroner’s Office confirmed the details of the call.

The victim, identified as Chad Greenenwald from Fox Lake, was discovered in the passenger seat of a car parked at a gas station. The vehicle showed signs of gunfire damage, and Greenenwald had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. He was rushed to Advocate Condell Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

The police are also focusing their investigation on the vicinity of Midland and Sycamore drives, where they suspect the shooting occurred shortly after 8 p.m. According to investigators, Greenenwald was one of three individuals in the car at the gas station. They believe the trio was likely meeting someone when they were confronted by at least one individual on foot.

The driver of the car managed to reach the gas station, where the police found the vehicle and the victim. Officers have been combing through the grass near Diamond Jubilee Park, close to the intersection of Midland and Sycamore Drive. A local resident reported seeing headlights in the area around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, which prompted his dog to bark. The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted hearing what he initially thought was a car backfiring, but later realized were gunshots.

The resident described the incident as “unusual,” noting that such violence was unprecedented in the area. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. The Round Lake Police Department is urging anyone who has information about the incident to contact them.
