School shooting: Three dead and five injured

MADISON, WI – A devastating school shooting at a private Christian school in Madison has resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including the suspected shooter, who is believed to have been a student. The incident, which occurred late Monday morning, has left the community grappling with shock and grief.

Authorities received reports of an active shooter at the Abundant Life Christian School just before 11 a.m. Responding officers entered the school and found the suspect deceased. The cause of death is still under investigation, as officials determine whether it was self-inflicted or due to another cause. Notably, police did not fire their weapons during the response.

In addition to the three fatalities, five individuals were injured and transported to local hospitals. Their injuries range from minor to critical, and the identities of those affected are being withheld until their families can be notified.

Madison Police Chief Shawn Barnes expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic event, emphasizing the need for community support and healing. “This is a heavy day for our community, and we must come together to support one another,” Barnes stated.

The school, which serves approximately 200 families from kindergarten through 12th grade, was immediately placed on lockdown. A reunification center was established nearby to provide worried parents and guardians with updates on their loved ones. The area around the school remains secured as investigators continue to gather evidence.

The shooting has sparked discussions about school safety measures, particularly the absence of metal detectors at the school. Chief Barnes noted that as a private Christian institution, the school operates independently of the local public school district’s security guidelines.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, local churches and organizations have offered counseling and support to those impacted. The Madison Police Department, along with federal and state agencies, is thoroughly investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Authorities are encouraging anyone with information to come forward to help piece together the events leading up to the incident. A second briefing is expected later today to provide further updates.
