Police shooting leaves 1 dead, 1 critically injured

ST. LOUIS, MO – A shooting in downtown St. Louis left one person critically injured in an incident on Thursday morning that police are classifying as ‘officer-involved’. The St. Louis Police Department reported that the shooting occurred around 7:30 a.m. near the area adjacent to Memorial Park and Enterprise Center.

Major Janice Bockstruck stated that an officer was stationed near the area setting up a mobile surveillance unit when they heard gunfire. Two men, believed to be involved in the incident, reportedly ran towards the officer. Bockstruck confirmed that the officer fired at the men, fatally wounding one.

The second man, who authorities believe was also shot by the now-deceased suspect, was critically injured. Officials moved the individual to a nearby hospital. Law enforcement has only recovered one firearm from the scene, belonging to the deceased man, and it remains uncertain if the surviving individual was armed.

Initial indications suggest the incident commenced around a local encampment near St. Louis City Hall. Sources say that the two individuals engaged in gunfire near the encampment and then started to run and shoot at each other. The officer, who was installing police surveillance equipment nearby, stumbled upon the scene.

As of 9:30 a.m., a substantial law enforcement presence continues to cordon off Market Street as investigations progress. According to local records, this incident marks the eighth police-involved shooting in St. Louis in 2024.
