Broward detectives said the shooting followed an argument over a parking space outside the McNab Road store.
NORTH LAUDERDALE, FL — Broward authorities identified a 62-year-old Lauderhill man as the person killed Tuesday after a shooting in the parking lot of a Walmart on West McNab Road.
Bart Diguglielmo died after being shot during what investigators described as a dispute over a parking space outside the store at 7900 W. McNab Road. The Broward Sheriff’s Office said a woman involved in the argument remained at the scene, was detained for questioning and told detectives she fired in self-defense. The case remains under investigation, and no charging decision had been announced as of Thursday.
The shooting was reported just before 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, after Broward County Regional Communications received a 911 call from the Walmart parking lot. Deputies and North Lauderdale Fire Rescue crews arrived and found Diguglielmo with a gunshot wound. Paramedics took him to Broward Health Medical Center, where he later died. Investigators said Diguglielmo and the woman had argued before the shooting, but they have not released a full account of what happened in the moments before the gunfire. The woman’s name had not been made public. Witness David Anderson said he had been walking toward the store when the scene changed quickly. “I was walking up and heard a lady screaming,” Anderson said.
Detectives said the woman who shot Diguglielmo stayed at the Walmart after the shooting and cooperated with investigators. Deputies detained her for questioning but did not immediately say whether she was arrested. The Sheriff’s Office said the woman claimed she acted in self-defense, a statement investigators are reviewing along with witness accounts and any available video from the parking lot. Officials have not said whether a firearm was recovered, whether Diguglielmo was armed or whether the two people knew each other before the encounter. Local news video showed a large law enforcement response around the store, with crime scene tape blocking parts of the parking area as deputies spoke with witnesses and collected evidence.
Diguglielmo’s family described him as a military veteran and a longtime nurse. A sister who spoke publicly after the shooting said he served in Desert Storm and worked as a nurse for about 30 years. She called the death “just heartbreaking” and said her brother was a Christian man who would not hurt anyone. His daughter, identified publicly only as Amanda, said she wanted her father to be remembered for more than the way he died. She said he was a “good man” and pushed back against early accounts that suggested the shooting may have followed anything beyond the parking-space dispute. Family members said Diguglielmo had experienced earlier loss, including the death of an identical twin years ago.
The case now moves through the Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide investigation before prosecutors decide whether charges are warranted. Detectives said the completed investigation will be presented to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office, which will review the evidence and determine whether the woman should face criminal charges. That review is expected to examine the self-defense claim, witness statements, surveillance footage, 911 records, forensic findings and any statements made by the woman and others at the scene. Authorities have not announced a timeline for when the case will be sent to prosecutors. They also have not said whether investigators are seeking additional witnesses from the busy retail plaza.
The shooting drew attention across Broward County because it happened in the middle of the day outside a large retail store. Shoppers arriving at the Walmart found deputies, medics and crime scene tape instead of a normal Tuesday afternoon parking lot. Some people said they first learned what happened from other customers as they walked toward the entrance. The store sits along McNab Road in a heavily traveled commercial area near neighborhoods in North Lauderdale, Tamarac and Lauderhill. Investigators have not described the parking dispute in detail, but officials said the argument happened before the shot was fired. The death left family members questioning how a brief encounter outside a store could turn fatal.
As of Thursday, July 2, the woman’s identity had not been released, and authorities had not announced charges. The next major step is the handoff of the completed homicide investigation to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office for review.
