Police: One dead, five hurt after gunfire at party

Officers say an argument among a small group escalated into shots fired around 1:45 a.m. on Vandalia Way near Anderson Road.

HOUSTON, Texas — A woman was killed and five other people were wounded early Saturday when gunfire broke out at a large party on the 15200 block of Vandalia Way in southwest Houston, police said. Officers responded about 1:45 a.m. and detained one person at the scene while investigators interviewed witnesses and searched the area.

Police said the shooting matters now because detectives are working to determine who fired and why, with five survivors hospitalized and the community seeking answers. Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir said the event drew a large crowd just inside the Beltway near Anderson Road. Investigators believe an argument between two or three people preceded the gunfire. No weapons had been recovered by midmorning, and the woman who died was pronounced at the scene. The conditions of the injured were not released. Homicide detectives are leading the case as officers canvass for video and additional witnesses.

Shortly after 1:45 a.m., patrol units were dispatched to reports of multiple shots fired and people down outside and near a residence on Vandalia Way. When officers arrived, they found six people with gunshot wounds, including a woman who died before she could be taken to a hospital. Five others were transported to area hospitals by ambulance and private vehicles, police said. Bashir told reporters that an argument among a small group appears to have escalated suddenly. “This started as a dispute between a couple of individuals,” he said, noting detectives were still sorting out the sequence of events as daylight broke and the partygoers dispersed.

Officials said one person was detained at the scene as a possible person of interest while investigators conducted interviews. Detectives were trying to establish whether there was more than one shooter and how many shots were fired. The gathering was described as a “large party,” but the exact number of attendees was not immediately known. Police said they had not recovered firearms as of late morning and were reviewing security cameras in nearby homes and at a cluster of businesses along Anderson Road and Beltway 8. The names, ages and conditions of the five surviving victims were not released. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences will confirm the identity of the woman who was killed.

Southwest Houston has seen several large, late-night gatherings this fall draw quick police responses for calls of shots fired, though most ended without fatalities. Saturday’s shooting happened in a neighborhood of apartment communities and single-family homes near Anderson Road, a corridor that runs east–west just inside the Beltway. While police emphasized that it is too early to say whether the party was promoted online, detectives said they will review social media posts and flyers as part of the timeline. Investigators are also checking prior calls for service at the address to determine whether officers had been dispatched there before this incident.

Detectives said the case remains an active homicide investigation. As of Saturday afternoon, no charges had been announced against the person detained. Investigators are conducting ballistic analysis once shell casings and any bullets are collected and logged, and they plan to request search warrants if probable cause is developed. Autopsy results from the medical examiner will establish the cause and manner of death for the woman who died. If arrests are made, initial court settings would likely appear early next week, and police said they expect to provide another briefing once detectives complete preliminary interviews.

Neighbors described waking to sirens and the sound of cars leaving quickly. A resident who lives a block away said she saw people “running and crying” as police blocked the street and set up crime scene tape before dawn. By sunrise, yellow markers dotted the pavement where investigators documented evidence. Bashir thanked residents for cooperating with detectives and said more information would be released as families are notified and witness statements are corroborated. “We know the community wants answers,” he said, “and we’re working to piece together exactly what happened out here.”

As of Saturday evening, police said the woman’s identity had not been made public and the conditions of the five injured victims were still being confirmed. Detectives plan to release an update after interviews and any surveillance video reviews are complete.
