Police Kill Suspect After Four Stabbed at Restaurant

The attack happened late Wednesday at Good Vibes Bar & Grill, where police said the suspect refused commands to drop a knife.

RICHARDSON, TX — Richardson police fatally shot a knife-wielding suspect late Wednesday after four people were stabbed inside Good Vibes Bar & Grill, authorities said, ending a violent call at a shopping center on Buckingham Road.

The incident remained under investigation Thursday morning, with police still working to identify the suspect, determine what led to the attack and learn more about the victims’ conditions. The four injured people and the suspect were all taken to hospitals after the confrontation. Police said the suspect later died and there was no ongoing threat to the public.

Police said officers were sent to the 2100 block of Buckingham Road at about 10 p.m. Wednesday after receiving reports that a man armed with a knife was threatening to hurt people. The call led officers to Good Vibes Bar & Grill, a restaurant and live music venue near Buckingham and Jupiter roads. When officers arrived, they found the man outside the entrance still holding a knife, police said. Officers were told there were victims inside. Police said officers gave the man multiple commands to drop the weapon, but he refused. Two officers then fired their service weapons, striking him, according to police.

After the shooting, officers and other first responders shifted to medical aid. Police said officers treated the wounded people inside the restaurant and also provided aid to the suspect until paramedics arrived. Four people injured in the knife attack were taken to local hospitals. Police had not released their names, ages or medical conditions as of Thursday morning. Authorities also had not said whether the victims were employees, customers or both. The suspect’s name had not been released, and police had not described any known connection between him and the restaurant or the people who were stabbed.

The attack unfolded during a busy night at the business. Good Vibes Bar & Grill said in a social media post that it was hosting music bingo at the time. Co-owner Jay Smith, who said he was out of town when the violence happened, asked for prayers for the injured person and customers who helped during the incident. Smith said staff members were shaken. “This was extremely unnecessary and I pray for resilience, healing and steadfast love for all involved,” Smith wrote. The restaurant said it would be closed Thursday and planned to reopen Friday.

Police described the case as both a knife attack and an officer-involved shooting. Investigators will review what happened before officers arrived, what they saw at the entrance and why two officers fired. Police have not said whether body camera video exists or when more details may be released. The department also had not announced whether the officers had been placed on administrative leave, a common step after police shootings. No officer injuries were reported. Authorities said more information would be released when available.

The scene drew a large emergency response to a commercial area lined with restaurants, shops and parking lots. The entrance to the bar and grill became the center of the investigation after police said the armed suspect was found outside and victims were located inside. The late hour, the public setting and the number of injured people added urgency to the response. By Thursday morning, the business had moved from a scheduled entertainment night to a temporary closure while police continued to process the case and the restaurant’s staff dealt with the aftermath.

Police said there was no continuing public threat, but key facts remained unknown Thursday, including the motive, the victims’ conditions and the suspect’s identity. The next milestone is the release of additional findings from Richardson police as the investigation continues.
