Carjacking Suspect Arrested After Night of Violent Crime

Several people were hospitalized after attacks across southwest Miami-Dade, including one man who was beaten and stabbed.

MIAMI, FL — A 33-year-old man was arrested Friday after a series of armed carjackings and robberies across southwest Miami-Dade left several people hospitalized Thursday night, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said.

The arrest came after deputies found one stolen vehicle and chased a person matching the suspect’s description, investigators said. The suspect, identified as Alejandro Martinez, was being held Friday at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as robbery detectives continued to review attacks reported in several parts of the county.

The first reported attack happened shortly before 8:45 p.m. Thursday near Southwest 67th Avenue and 40th Street, also known as Bird Road. Deputies said a man was beaten, stabbed and robbed of his vehicle during an armed carjacking. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took him to a hospital in critical condition. Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Detective Angel Rodriguez said Martinez fled in the victim’s vehicle after the attack. “The violence did not end there,” Rodriguez said as investigators described what they believed was a connected series of crimes that moved west through the county.

Deputies later responded to two more reports of armed robberies or carjackings. One was near Southwest 137th Avenue and 56th Street, also known as Miller Drive. Another was at a gas station near Southwest 157th Avenue and 88th Street, also known as Kendall Drive. In both cases, victims were taken to hospitals. Rodriguez said those victims were in stable condition. Surveillance video from a nearby 7-Eleven showed one man walking into the store while holding his neck and bleeding, with injuries visible on his arm. Store worker Omar Orozco said the man told him the attack happened in the parking lot. “He took his phone and his wallet,” Orozco said, describing what the injured man told him.

The search then moved to the area of Southwest 152nd Avenue and 72nd Street, near Sunset Drive, where deputies found one of the stolen vehicles, investigators said. Deputies said they saw a person matching the suspect’s description running from it. After a foot chase, Martinez was taken into custody. Detectives were later seen collecting evidence as two vehicles were towed from a shopping center area. Officials did not immediately release the names of the injured victims. Investigators also did not say whether a firearm or other weapon had been recovered. The sheriff’s office said the Robbery Unit remained involved in the case Friday.

Investigators said they later linked Martinez to two additional incidents in the Midwest and Hammocks districts. Rodriguez said detectives learned about those cases after interviewing the suspect. In those attacks, officials said, victims also were beaten and taken by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to area hospitals. Their conditions were not immediately released. The cluster of reported attacks covered several miles of southwest Miami-Dade, from Bird Road to the West Kendall area. The timing and locations prompted a broad search Thursday night as deputies checked vehicles, gas stations and shopping areas while emergency crews treated victims.

Jail records listed Martinez as facing several charges, including attempted felony murder, armed robbery with carjacking, armed robbery with a weapon and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His bond was listed Friday as to be set. The sheriff’s office also said the domestic violence unit was filing additional charges linked to a separate incident. Authorities had not announced a court date or released a full arrest report by Friday evening. The investigation remained open, and officials said detectives were still working to determine the full sequence of events and whether any other people were involved.

The case drew attention after images from the 7-Eleven showed one injured man seeking help inside the store. People inside appeared to help him as deputies and paramedics arrived. The video placed one part of the investigation in a busy commercial area where drivers and shoppers were moving through late Thursday. Orozco said the man came in bleeding and said he had been robbed. Deputies later tied that report to the broader search. At the first scene, officials said, the victim’s injuries were severe enough that he remained in critical condition after being taken from Bird Road to a local hospital.

By Friday evening, Martinez remained jailed at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, and the sheriff’s office said the case was still under investigation. The next public milestone is expected through court records or an updated filing as prosecutors review the charges.
